Year 5 2018 - 2019

Reading

We all know that time can be precious outside of school, however, we have an increasing number of children who are failing to read at least 4 times a week and have it recorded in their home school diaries. Please can we ask that reading is completed regularly: either from a book from the school library, a suitable book from home or via the Bug Club website. Studies show that those who read regularly and are read to regularly go on to have greater success academically.

Consent forms

The office has recently sent out new consent forms to ensure CJS is compliant with current GDPR regulations. Children should have brought letters home to give consent for use of videos/photos and whether your child has permission to walk home alone. Please return these documents to school as soon as possible. If you have any questions then please contact the front office.

Harry Potter Theme Day

The children in Year 5 seem to be completely immersed in our new Harry Potter theme this half term. We hope to celebrate our learning journey with Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and Hagrid (to name but a few characters!) on the last Thursday of term (20th December).

We have some 'magical' lessons planned during sessions in the morning and hope to watch Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the afternoon. It is our usual policy that we show U certificate films; Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a PG rating. We feel that it would be a perfect celebration to complete our learning. If you do not wish your child to watch this film, please can you let your child's class teacher know, in writing, by Friday 7 December.

We also hope the children can wear something a little bit special too! Robes, magical hats and wands are brilliant but please use or recycle costumes/outfits rather than spending a fortune on new costumes.

Thank you for your support in making this half term so spell-binding! - The Year 5 team

Y5 Homework

Reading - we would like all children to read at least four times a week.  They can choose to read a book from the library or one from Bug Club.

Times Tables - children in Y5 should know all times tables facts up to 12 x 12. They should practise these regularly in order to become more fluent and acquire rapid recall.

Spellings - teachers set new spellings to learn each week. Please support your child to learn them in readiness for their test.

Maths and English - Y5 have one piece of Maths and one piece of English each week. Please support your child to complete this on time. Occasionally, we may set homework to be completed online (such as Bug Club, Education City or Mathletics).
