Year 5 2018 - 2019

Titanic Theme Day

As part of our work about Titanic, we will be having a theme day for all of Year 5 on Thursday 7th June. We already have lots of exciting activities planned to investigate different aspects of life aboard the ‘unsinkable’ ship. As part of this, we would like to invite all Year 5’s to come to school dressed as either: a passenger, crew member or a Titanic related artefact. Please do not go out to buy anything especially for the day, just be creative with what you already have at home.

We look forward to an action packed day and thank you in anticipation for your support.  smiley

Mosque Visit

Year 5 enjoyed two fantastic mornings at the Mosque in Derby this term where we were warmly welcomed.  We all had the opportunity to visit both prayer rooms in the Mosque and looked at how the building is organised and decorated.  Lead by teachers from The Open Centre, we explored the features of the Mosque and compared these to other places of worship. The children found out what it is like to live as a Muslim in Derby and made many comparisons between the beliefs and worship of Muslims, Christians and Sikhs across the city.

Many thanks to our parent helpers for coming with us and to our Year 5 pupils for behaving brilliantly and asking/answering questions so well.

SRE

Over the next few weeks, year 5 teachers will be delivering lessons on relationships, emotions, personal hygiene and growing up/changes to the body. This will be discussed in an open, mature and sensible manner at an age appropriate level. Should you wish to discuss any of the topics covered then please contact your child's class teacher. Children may wish to discuss some of the topics at home (which is encouraged), so please be supportive and offer advice at a level which you believe is appropriate to your child. Thank you for your support!

Y5 Homework

Reading - we would like all children to read at least four times a week.  They can choose to read a book from the library or one from Bug Club.

Times Tables - children in Y5 should know all times tables facts up to 12 x 12. They should practise these regularly in order to become more fluent and acquire rapid recall.

Spellings - teachers set new spellings to learn each week. Please support your child to learn them in readiness for their test.

Maths and English - Y5 have one piece of Maths and one piece of English each week. Please support your child to complete this on time. Occasionally, we may set homework to be completed online (such as Bug Club, Education City or Mathletics).
